“We are learning to memorize people’s faces. This brain activity must not be analytical, but reflexive. And so, thousands of faces, thousands of silhouettes of people flash across the screen before me. My finger is on the button, like on a trigger. Upon seeing the same face appear twice on the screen, I must instantly press the button. If I make a mistake, a light but unpleasant electric shock goes through me. Press the button at the wrong time — a light shock. Fail to press it when required — again a shock.”
